Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

 A group of lung diseases                (like emphysema and chronic bronchitis) that block airflow and make it hard to breathe.

Type 1: Autoimmune, usually appears in childhood.
Type 2: Often lifestyle-related, more common in adults.
Symptoms:

  • Increased thirst

  • Frequent urination

  • Fatigue

  • Slow-healing wounds

Patient Tip: Control sugar intake, stay active, and take medications/insulin as prescribed.

Asthma

A chronic disease that affects the airways in the lungs, causing them to narrow and swell.

Triggers: Allergens, cold air, exercise, infections.
Symptoms:

  • Wheezing

  • Coughing

  • Chest tightness

  • Shortness of breath

Patient Tip: Avoid triggers, use inhalers as prescribed, and keep an asthma action plan.

Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)

 A condition where the heart can’t pump blood effectively.

Causes: Heart attacks, high blood pressure, heart valve disease.
Symptoms:

  • Shortness of breath

  • Fatigue

  • Swelling in legs

  • Rapid heartbeat

Patient Tip: Limit salt, manage weight, take medications daily, and monitor fluid intake.

Renal Failure (Kidney Failure)

 When the kidneys lose the ability to filter waste from blood.

 

Types:

  • Acute (sudden)

  • Chronic (gradual loss over time)
    Symptoms:

  • Swelling in legs and feet

  • Fatigue

  • Confusion

  • Decreased urine output

Patient Tip: Follow renal diet, control diabetes/hypertension, and attend regular dialysis if needed.

Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)

A condition in which the force of the blood against artery walls is too high. Often called a “silent killer.”

Type 1: Autoimmune, usually appears in childhood.
Type 2: Often lifestyle-related, more common in adults.
Symptoms:

  • Increased thirst

  • Frequent urination

  • Fatigue

  • Slow-healing wounds

Diabetes (Type 1 & Type 2)

 A metabolic disorder where the body either doesn’t produce insulin or doesn’t use it effectively.

Type 1: Autoimmune, usually appears in childhood.
Type 2: Often lifestyle-related, more common in adults.
Symptoms:

  • Increased thirst

  • Frequent urination

  • Fatigue

  • Slow-healing wounds

Sleep Apnea

 A disorder where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep.

Types:

  • Obstructive (most common)

  • Central
    Symptoms:

  • Loud snoring

  • Daytime sleepiness

  • Morning headaches

  • Gasping during sleep

Patient Tip: Use CPAP machine, lose weight if overweight, avoid alcohol before bed.

Hyperlipidemia (High Cholesterol)

 Elevated levels of cholesterol or triglycerides in the blood.

Causes: Poor diet, lack of exercise, obesity, genetics.
Symptoms: Often none, but increases risk for heart disease.
Risks: Heart attack, stroke, atherosclerosis.

Patient Tip: Eat a low-fat diet, exercise regularly, and take statins or other prescribed drugs.

Diabetes (Type 1 & Type 2)
